As police tracked down and arrested a suspect in the weekend bombing in New York, Hillary Clinton argued on Monday that voters should trust her experience in dealing with terrorism over what she labeled the “irresponsible” and “reckless” rhetoric of Republican nominee Donald Trump.
“I’m the only candidate in this race who has been part of the hardest decisions to take terrorists off the battlefield,” Clinton said several times at an airport news conference outside New York, referring to her time as Secretary of State under President Obama.
Clinton then took the same message to Temple University in Philadelphia at lunch time, using a speech to tell younger voters that the New York attack was “a sobering reminder that we need steady leadership in a dangerous world.”
“I will never be the showman my opponent is,” Clinton said. “You know what, that’s okay with me.”
“America is better than Donald Trump,” Clinton said to cheers.
With 50 days until Election Day, Clinton was more pointed in her attacks on Trump, but also more open to the idea that voters should look at both of the candidates closely.
“Give us both a fair hearing,” Clinton said at one point. “Hold us accountable for our ideas,” as the former Senator and First Lady happily acknowledged to Temple students that she spends a lot of time on policy details.
