Hillary Clinton on Friday chose Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia as her running mate in 2016, opting for a more middle-of-the-road Democrat who might disappoint some more liberal voters in the party.
“Tim is a lifelong fighter for progressive causes and one of the most qualified vice presidential candidates in our nation’s history,” Clinton said in an email to supporters that used the buzz word “progressive.”
“He’s a man of relentless optimism who believes no problem is unsolvable if you’re willing to put in the work,” Clinton added.
Kaine is well known around Washington, D.C. as a serious policy wonk who doesn’t mind being immersed in details.
Eight years ago he was one of the last people considered by Barack Obama for Vice President, but the final choice was Joe Biden.
Just got off the phone with Hillary. I’m honored to be her running mate. Can’t wait to hit the trail tomorrow in Miami!

The choice of Kaine – a former Governor of Virginia – would seem to make it more difficult for Republicans to win the Old Dominion, which President Obama turned Blue in both 2008 and 2012.
“I enthusiastically applaud Secretary Clinton’s choice,” said Kaine’s colleague in the Senate, Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA).
“Without reservation, I can say there is no one of higher integrity and trustworthiness,” Warner added.
“The contrasts between a Clinton-Kaine ticket and a Trump-Pence ticket couldn’t be more stark,” said American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.
Like Mike Pence, I would be certain that few voters outside of Kaine’s home state would know much about him, as this choice seems unlikely to sway voters for or against Hillary Clinton – except maybe in Virginia.
Clinton trumpeted her pick immediately on social media:

One would have to say that Clinton’s pick is a “safe” one – there seems to be little risk involved with anything linked to Tim Kaine in the Senate.
